Spanish restaurants in the Netherlands beyond Amsterdam: The Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht and more

We have already covered Amsterdam in an Amsterdam weekend guide. This guide covers the rest of the country. Every detail below comes from the restaurant's own record in our directory.

The Hague

La Rana on Stationsweg has the earliest date in this guide. Its record says it dates back to 1987, as one of the first Spanish restaurants in The Hague. The current owner, Pablo Naranjo, reopened it with a concept that mixes tradition and modernity, and the food and wine list covers all the regions of Spain.

El Bar at Noordeinde 165 is a tapas bar with cured meats, cheeses, Spanish wines and cava. Its record names croquetas, pan con tomate and chorizo in cider among its classic dishes.

Tapisco on Kneuterdijk describes itself as modern tapas with a local twist and some Portuguese influence. The products it names include seafood, empanada, anchovies, squid and boneless ibérico ribs.

Rotterdam

Lokanta Proeflokaal has been serving Spanish food in Rotterdam since 2003. We profiled it in a separate post, which covers its regional focus and its near-exclusive use of Spanish products.

Destino on Zaagmolenkade serves modern Spanish cooking. Its record says the tapas and dishes use Spanish products or local seasonal ones, with a wide selection of Spanish wines and beers.

Utrecht and Arnhem

In Utrecht, Sevilla is on Korte Jansstraat. Its record describes Spanish staff, a lively interior and cooking with Andalusian touches, which fits the name.

In Arnhem, Retiro on Apeldoornseweg is a personal project. The owner writes that Retiro is one of their favourite places in Madrid, and that the restaurant brings together their passion for Spanish food, wine and the city.

Breda and Zeeland

Gaudim on Kloosterplein in Breda is the Catalan option. Its record describes food and drink from "everything between mountain and sea", the Catalan idea of mixing produce from the hills and the coast.

Down in Zeeland, Tis Boven in Oostburg drops the traditional starter-main-dessert sequence. The menu is built around raciones for sharing, from classic tapas to more modern Spanish plates.

Amsterdam, briefly

Our Amsterdam weekend guide covers the city in more detail, including these two. La Oliva on Egelantiersstraat cooks Cantabrian and Basque food with a wide range of pintxos. Hasta La Vista uses recipes from across Spain and some from Portugal, in a room decorated with red tiles and olive trees.

How to use this guide

Opening days differ between these restaurants, and several do not list hours for every day of the week. Check each profile page for listed hours, then confirm with the restaurant before you travel.
