Spanish breakfast is a small, unhurried affair, and when a Spanish restaurant abroad does a proper weekend brunch it is one of the best-value meals in the city. Here is what to look for.
The morning classics
- Churros with thick hot chocolate — the weekend indulgence.
- Tostada with tomato — grilled bread rubbed with tomato, olive oil and salt. Simple, perfect.
- Tortilla española — the potato omelette, served warm or at room temperature.
- A cortado or café con leche to slow the whole thing down.

The sweet finish
If there is baking, look for tarta de Santiago — Galicia’s almond cake — or a slice of crema catalana. Both travel well and both signal a kitchen that bakes in-house.

Where to eat it
- Boqueria Seaport in Boston serves tapas all day and a Spanish-style weekend brunch.
- Lunyalita at Liverpool's Albert Dock does weekend breakfasts and Spanish sharing plates.
- Mallorca Reforma in Mexico City is a restaurant and pastry shop open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
- Madrid 1995 in Shanghai serves coffee and churros in the morning.
