La Caja de Música, Taipei: A Spanish Restaurant Founded by Two Castilian-Leonese Chefs

La Caja de Música in Taipei was opened in 2011 by two chefs from the same part of Spain, Castilla y León. According to the restaurant's own description, they are Luis Miguel Hernando Sahagún, from Valladolid, and Ramsés del Cura Nogal, from Burgos.

The name means "the music box", and the room follows through on it. Our listing says the restaurant sits in Taipei's central commercial area and is decorated with musical instruments, which reflects the owner's passion for live music. We have not eaten there, so we only describe what the listing says.

The founders and where they come from

Castilla y León is an inland region, and Valladolid and Burgos are two of its provincial capitals. The listing doesn't say what the two chefs cooked before Taipei, so we won't guess at their backgrounds. What it does give us is where each of them is from.

What the menu says it is

The restaurant describes its menu as "100% authentic" Spanish dishes, mostly traditional in style, with some new creations added. That is a self-description, so read it as the kitchen's intent, not a verdict. The project, it says, was born to promote Spanish gastronomy and culture, and it combines the food with musical and artistic events.

That second part is the distinctive one: music and art events are part of the stated purpose, not an afterthought. We don't have an events calendar for it. The website on our listing is a Facebook page, so that is the place to ask whether anything is on during your visit.

Other Spanish restaurants in Taipei

La Caja de Música is one of seven Spanish listings in Taiwan, and five of them are in Taipei. Here is how the others describe themselves, so you can pick a second night:

  • El Marqués on Yanji Street was founded in May 2017 by chef Jorge Nebot and his wife, Vanesa Tsai. Its listing mentions a menu of around 60 dishes and says advance reservations are required, especially for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays. We also wrote a full profile of El Marqués.
  • Jarana calls itself a modern Spanish restaurant and, in our records, opens Tuesday to Saturday evenings from 17:30.
  • Cava Baja describes modern cuisine and is open for lunch and dinner on most days in our records.
