A Spanish Weekend in Bogotá: Calle 93 to Calle 118, Plus La Macarena

Bogotá has nine Spanish restaurants in our directory, and their addresses fall into a handy pattern. Five are packed between Calle 93 and Calle 96, two are up on Calle 118, and two are further south. That makes an easy weekend plan: one day around the 90s, one day further north, and a choice of detours.

Everything below comes from each restaurant's own record in our directory. We do not have opening hours for these venues, so check before you go, especially on a Sunday.

Saturday: the Calle 93 to 96 cluster

Start with lunch at Pajares Salinas, at Carrera 10 #96-8. It is a traditional Spanish restaurant founded in 1953 by Spanish immigrants, and it has become one of the best-known restaurants in the city. It has the highest price band among the Bogotá listings that show one, so treat it as the sit-down meal of the weekend.

A short way along Calle 96, El Hórreo Casa Pepe at Calle 96 #11A-15 focuses on traditional cooking from the north of Spain. The name is a clue: a hórreo is the raised stone or wooden granary you see across Galicia and Asturias, built on pillars to keep grain dry and away from rodents.

For the evening, the 93 end of the cluster has three options:

  • Vitapas, Calle 94A #11A-90, is a modern space built around wine, tapas and paella, and it also does delivery if you would rather eat in.
  • 5&Quince, Calle 93A #12-35 in Chapinero, is contemporary Spanish with a wide wine list and its own shop. It is also known for cocktails and live shows, so it is the pick if you want more than dinner.
  • Bulería, Calle 93 #11-19, is inside the Estelar Parque de la 93 hotel. It is tapas-led and paired with wine and sangria. We profiled it in more detail in our Bulería spotlight.

Sunday: north to Calle 118

On Sunday, head north. Barrica Tapas y Cañas, at Carrera 15A #118-09, names one dish as its speciality: suckling pig. In Spain that is cochinillo, roasted until the skin crackles, and it is most closely linked with Segovia. A caña, by the way, is a small glass of draught beer, the standard order at a Spanish bar.

Further along Calle 118, near Carrera 5, La Puerta de Alcalá at Calle 118 #5-13 has more than 24 years of experience. Its record lists tapas, ham, paella, wine, sangria and a lot of flamenco music.

The two are about ten carreras apart, so most people will pick one.

Two detours further south

If you are staying in the centre, or want a change of scene, two venues sit well south of the others.

Gaudí, at Carrera 4A #27-54, is a traditional Spanish restaurant in La Macarena. Its record keeps it simple: tapas, paellas and sangrias.

La Favorita, at Calle 65 Bis #4-12, describes its cooking as traditional ingredients reworked by chef Koldo Miranda, with a generous drinks list.

Before you go

A few practical notes for planning:

  • Addresses in Bogotá are grid-based, so "Calle 96 #11A-15" tells you the cross street (Carrera 11A) as well as the street. That makes the 93 to 96 cluster easy to find.
  • We do not list opening hours for any of these nine, so confirm times directly, especially on Sunday.
  • For the full list, see our Bogotá page. If paella is on your list, our guide to how to spot a bad paella is worth reading first.
