Sangría — the Spanish way (less sweet, more wine)

Real Spanish sangría is a wine punch, not a fruit salad with alcohol. Young Rioja, orange, a little brandy, and restraint with the sugar.

Ingredients

  • ·1 bottle young fruity red wine (Rioja joven or garnacha)
  • ·1 orange, thinly sliced
  • ·1 lemon, thinly sliced
  • ·50 ml Spanish brandy (or triple sec)
  • ·2 tbsp sugar
  • ·1 cinnamon stick (optional)
  • ·Chilled sparkling water to finish
  • ·Plenty of ice

Method

    Dissolve the sugar in the brandy in a large jug.

    Add the wine, fruit slices and cinnamon. Stir gently.

    Refrigerate at least 2 hours — overnight is better.

  4. 4

    Serve over ice, topped with a splash of sparkling water. Never let it go flat or warm.
