The great democratic drink of Basque festivals: equal parts red wine and cola, poured over ice and drunk from a plastic cup among friends. It is cheap, cheerful and unbothered about pretension, which is exactly the point.

Ingredients
- ·150 ml young red wine, inexpensive and fruity
- ·150 ml cola, well chilled
- ·Ice cubes
- ·A slice of lemon (optional)
Method

Fill a tall glass or a plastic cup with ice cubes.

Pour in the red wine, then top with an equal measure of cold cola.

Give it a gentle stir so the two combine without losing all the fizz.

Add a slice of lemon if you like a little brightness.

Serve immediately while cold and lively, and scale it up easily by mixing equal parts in a jug for a crowd.
