“We visited Tapea without a reservation and politely asked if there was a table available. Unfortunately, our first impression was poor. Instead of being greeted with a simple "hello" or "welcome," the first thing we were asked was whether we had a reservation. Hospitality starts at the door, and this was not a welcoming introduction. The restaurant itself is visually attractive, especially the open kitchen, which creates a pleasant atmosphere. However, the experience is somewhat undermined by a microwave placed in plain sight. It may be practical, but it feels out of place in a restaurant positioning itself as a premium Spanish dining experience. According to Tapea's own branding, they emphasize authentic Spanish gastronomy, high standards, and warm Mediterranean hospitality, making details like these even more noticeable. Another odd detail was that every member of the service team wore communication earpieces. In a restaurant of this size, it came across as unnecessary and theatrical rather than efficient. It projects the image of a highly coordinated operation, but unfortunately the actual service doesn't match that impression. The food was decent. My entrecôte was not cooked to the requested doneness, but by the time someone finally asked how everything was, the meal was already finished, making the question rather pointless. The biggest issue, however, was what they call their "welcoming service." We were served a few potato chips, two small shots of cream soup, and a little olive oil without anyone explaining that these items were optional or chargeable. They simply appeared on the table, and only later did we discover they had been added to the bill. Charging guests for unsolicited items without clearly informing them beforehand is, in my opinion, unacceptable and misleading. Having spent over 15 years working in hospitality across three continents, I have never encountered this practice. A genuine welcome should build trust, not create unpleasant surprises when the bill arrives. Overall, while the food was acceptable, the service lacked warmth, transparency, and professionalism. There are many better places in Malta where guests are treated with honesty and genuine hospitality. I wouldn't return or recommend it.”

“This restaurant is absolutely worth visiting. Honestly, everything was amazing. I had the opportunity to celebrate my birthday here, and I was truly impressed by the incredible service. Our waitress, Valentina, was wonderful — she was always happy to help us take pictures and made me feel really special on my birthday. The rest of the staff were also so kind and attentive. When they sang happy birthday to me, it genuinely felt heartfelt and sincere. The food was fantastic, definitely one of the best paellas I’ve ever had. The only small downside is that the restaurant is a bit hidden, which makes it easy for people to miss out on such an amazing experience. Totally recommended — great food, a beautiful place, and excellent service. I would definitely come back!”

“I hate giving poor reviews if a restaurant only has you as a lunch booking then I’d prefer to be told that economically it’s unviable and asked to defer which I’d perfectly understand. The atmosphere was lacking as the sole diner. I add comments on each dish with the image as this helps confer the experience. The fried calamari is exceptional—tender, clean in flavor, and perfectly balanced in seasoning and texture. The jamón salad is equally impressive, showcasing high-quality cured ham, proper slicing, and a well-judged balance between saltiness, acidity, and freshness. The kitchen demonstrates a strong command of Spanish culinary fundamentals, particularly in ingredient selection and technique. Flavors are confident and well-defined, avoiding unnecessary embellishment while allowing the core ingredients to speak for themselves. The only notable shortcoming lies in the rice dishes. Both the seafood paella and the squid ink rice lean overly salty, which slightly disrupts the otherwise refined balance of the meal and masks some of the natural sweetness of the seafood. With better restraint in seasoning, these dishes could reach the same high standard as the rest of the menu. Overall, this is a Spanish restaurant with a high level of authenticity, technical competence, and ambition. Aside from the seasoning issue in the rice dishes, the quality of the food places it among the stronger Spanish offerings available and makes it well worth recommending.”
