“Food tasted really good and as a celiac (allergic to Gluten) thankfully the chef seemed to know what’s up with allergens! Went here for dinner, located near the Bund right in the centre, opposite the Shangri-La. It’s a Spanish Tapas place, with a range of options on the menu. The front facing staff didn’t speak much English, but were able to take a picture of my translated celiac card, and discuss each bit of the order with the chef. The clearly didn’t have a good understanding of GF or celiac disease, however the kitchen seemed to understand the requirements. We were able to order 4 dishes gluten free (one required modification), and there were a few others pointed out to us on the menu that we could have tried. Two things that added confidence from the chef: 1) we ordered a chicken dish originally, however the dish never turned up. We queried and they explained that it had gluten in it - would’ve been good to tell us, but still reassuring they didn’t bring it out! 2) I tried to order the octopus with mashed potatoes, however was told the mash included chicken stock which contained gluten. This felt relatively specific suggesting they had good awareness in the kitchen of what was safe. They were able to modify with peppers / veg instead of the potato. Cross contamination will be a risk here. You can see the kitchen from the tables and it is small. While I am sure they were careful, there will definitely be a risk here. Overall this place is worth a try, just ensure you advocate clearly and check each dish. Bring someone who speaks mandarin if possible! Also encourage staff to take a photo of your translated celiac card to show the chef (the one I used attached in the images). Extra questions to the staff and kitchen around CC is worthwhile to help build out future reviews. Still safer than most restaurants I’ve encountered around China, so that’s something!”

“I was at their outlet in Hongqiao. Claimed to be the #1 Seafood Paella in China. Haven't tried enough to know if they are truly #1 but the paella was good. Flavourful and generous, both with the rice and seafood (abalone, octopus, prawns, clams). The taste of the sea in every mouth. We ordered a salad, beef with garlic and fries for sharing too. All were excellent. Nothing wow about the fries, just pure comfort food being super hungry after a long day. The beef was perfectly tender, the garlic and spring onion stems were amazing too, though the dish is pricey for that portion.”

“We visited Don Quixote Spanish Restaurant in Shanghai as tourists, expecting a nice dinner. Unfortunately, after eating there, my wife suffered severe food poisoning. That night, she was vomiting continuously from midnight until morning. It was one of the worst nights of our life, especially as foreigners in Shanghai with no one to help. The next morning, I had to go out under heavy rain to look for a pharmacy. It was a public holiday, and almost everything was closed. After a long, stressful walk in the rain, I finally found a small pharmacy near our hotel. We were alone, tired, and worried, because we also had our international flight scheduled the same day. This ruined our trip and caused us a lot of pain, stress, and financial burden. I hope the restaurant takes serious responsibility for food hygiene.
